Gotta disagree with the generalisation about shipping villains “we all have the fantasy that we’re gonna be the thing that’s so powerful and so important in someone else’s life that they’ll change for us”. Nah, the “everything’s fucked up and twisted forever” is hot for some people.
And even if we do actively enjoy that Draco In Leather Pants “redeeming the bad boy through the power of love” fantasy, we don’t have to think that’s what’s really onscreen or at all sensible or hot IRL. Maybe we do get a clear answer from the text sometimes, and/or that this might depend on the beholder’s (if not always the creator’s) conscious awareness of real-life abuse of power dynamics – ie their feminist, racial awareness, etc. Shipping it might still be hot – with a willing suspension of disbelief.
